Science
Science is a core curriculum subject that is crucial to children’s understanding of the world and future career aspirations. At Kirkoswald we intend for all children to build an in-depth scientific understanding through recalled, connected substantive knowledge, explicit vocabulary expectations, a conceptual understanding of science (through a progressive use of science models) and a hands-on, investigatory approach. Through our science curriculum, children build both their knowledge and understanding of the world and a scientific mindset, helping them to approach new problems and situations logically and thoughtfully.
Our intention is that children are appropriately challenged through an ambitious curriculum, dual objective teaching, effective questioning and formative assessment. They build connected substantive knowledge through ensuring secure prior knowledge, conceptual understanding to link knowledge across the curriculum and blended learning across the wider curriculum. Factual knowledge is grounded into conceptual knowledge that then expands into connected knowledge.
We aim for children to become increasingly independent in their investigative skills, so that by the end of Key Stage 2 they are confidently planning and carrying out their own investigations and are able to share their results and conclusions clearly and logically with others.
