Phonics

By the time children leave KS1 they will be fluent readers equipped with the tools to tackle unfamiliar words and materials. All children are taught strategies to support their progress in becoming confident readers who enjoy reading for pleasure. At Kirkoswald C of E School we believe that this vision must be underpinned by a systematic and structured approach to Phonics. Phonics is taught daily in the Early Years and Key Stage 1 through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme, during these sessions children will learn to recognise all different grapheme-phoneme correspondences. Our phonics teaching follows a specific sequence of progression so children can build on prior knowledge and skills. Children apply their phonics skills in regular reading sessions within school to develop their blending, comprehension, prosody and vocabulary along the way.

Little Wandle Phonics resources in the parent section will help you support your child. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
