Reading
At Kirkoswald CE Primary School, we believe that reading is the key which opens the door to the whole curriculum. Our intention is that children become confident, competent readers who love reading both for knowledge and pleasure. Through reading, children will engage their imaginations, widen their vocabulary, empathise with different characters and viewpoints and learn information about a wide variety of subjects.
We know that regular opportunities to read is a key factor to success. In the EYFS and Key Stage 1, children are taught to read using Little Wandle Phonics Scheme. Through this scheme they engage with a wide variety of high-quality texts and gain the skills they need to become confident, fluent readers. Please visit the ‘Phonics’ section of our website to find out more.
In Key Stage Two children engage in quiet reading after lunch every day. This gives all children the opportunity to spend quality quiet time reading and to continue to develop their love of books. During weekly ‘buddy reading’ time, children in Years 5 and 6 read to children in the EYFS and Key Stage 1, giving a sense of shared pleasure and purpose to children’s reading.
Reading has a high importance throughout the curriculum. High-quality, subject specific texts are used in lessons and are available for children to research from in the classroom, appropriate to the curriculum areas being studied.
We understand the importance of children transferring their reading skills between school and home and aim that children will continue to develop their love of reading out of school time.
Writing and Grammar/Punctuation/Spelling
By the end of their time at Kirkoswald, our intention is that every child can write confidently and fluently in a range of styles, using appropriate grammar and punctuation and accurate spelling. We intend for children to develop a love of and a flair for writing, using their skills to express their ideas to an audience, whether through imaginative story-telling, poetry, presenting an argument or writing a factual report. Children across the school will build on prior learned devices and structures to enhance the effectiveness and competence of what they write. They will develop ability to plan, draft, write, evaluate and edit their writing for different purposes and audiences, allowing them to make decisions and analyse their effectiveness as their writing develops. We place a high importance on children’s presentation skills, ensuring children practise and are praised for neat and careful handwriting. Through regular practice we intend to give children confidence and mastery in spelling, both through using the National Curriculum Spelling lists for each year group and through learning to write and spell subject-specific vocabulary. In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, children follow the Little Wandle spelling programme. Our aim is to provide regular opportunities for children to develop and extend their writing ability throughout the curriculum.
