Non-Staff Governor Profiles|
Updated November 2017
Mark Bowman - Parent Governor
I am an ex pupil of Kirkoswald C of E school and along with my wife Julie have two boys in attendance. Being a parent I am keen to be involved with the school and realise the importance of their education.
After leaving Harper Adams Agricultural College I came home to work on the family farm. We are predominantly beef and sheep and the only fell walking I do is gathering the sheep.
Presently I am the numeracy governor which fits in well with my passion for horse racing when working out the odds!
April Farish - Parent Governor
I became a parent governor in September 2016, my daughter had just started school. Annabelle is the fourth generation of the “Parker” family to attend Kirkoswald C of E School, and as a parent and ex pupil myself I wanted to be part of school life. My husband and I also have a son, Seth who will start school in 2020, so school life will be a big part of our lives for some time.
Like my father Bob, I have lived in the village all my life, after taking two years to renovate our house I have move 2 meters up the road! Being part of the village community is a huge part of our family life, making sure our children have a nice environment to grow up in.
My hobbies include making various soft furnishing (Unicorn headbands being the latest make!) attending exercise classes and walking with family and friends.
David Fowler - Foundation Governor
Giles Harrison - Parent Governor
Iain Henderson - Co-opted Governor
I am originally from Yorkshire and moved to the Eden Valley in 2005. I am a Chartered Surveyor by profession and am a Director of Carigiet Cowen in Carlisle with primary responsibility for property management and non-domestic rating advice within the Practice. I have three daughters two of whom are already at the school and the third is due to start in Reception in September 2017.
At present, I am one of the Governors on the Finance, Premises and Health & Safety Committee and am the nominated Governor for the Eco Schools initiative.
I enjoy music, walking, cycling, running and looking after our modest small holding which is frequently over-run with chickens!
Andy Hodgkinson - LA Governor
I have been a parent governor at Kirkoswald CE School for nearly three years. I have a child in school and a child who will start school in 2016. I am originally from London and moved to Cumbria in 1997 where I have settled with my wife and family. I currently work as a marine surveyor in the oil industry and this means that I am often overseas. My time at home is spent with my family and we enjoy walking, climbing and socialising with friends in the community.
Colin Munro - Foundation Governor
Nic Renison - Parent Governor
I'm from Shropshire but have been living in Cumbria for ten years and our two daughters attend Kirkoswald School. I was brought up on a dairy farm and having spent many years milking cows, I then worked for a pharmaceutical company. We are now farming just outside Renwick and work for a sheep genetic company part time.
We consider ourselves very lucky to have Kirkoswald School on our door step and through being a parent and governor it gives me the opportunity to help ensure it continues to be a thriving place and for many years to come. The school provides a fantastic mix of academic achievement, outdoor adventure, sport and musical concerts that blow you away!
Wendy Smith - Foundation Governor
I have been invited to join the Governing Body as a Foundation Governor in the interim period awaiting a new vicar for our parish.
I have lived in Parkhead just outside Kirkoswald for 27 years and have always taken a keen interest in our local community. I have two grown up children and three grandchildren, two of whom are primary school age.
I retired from full time employment recently but have spent my entire working life in education firstly as a teacher and then for 16 years a headteacher and finally 12 years working in the Local Authority as a Senior Advisor. My last post was to take overall responsibility for primary education across the county. We are lucky to have such a very good school in our village and I hope that my experience will prove useful and helpful into the future.
Sean Twomey - Co-opted Governor
I am originally from Hull, but moved to Cumbria in 2016 when I returned from living overseas in New Zealand with my wife and two children, who now attend Kirkoswald primary school. We have put family, lifestyle and the children’s school and their education at the centre of our relocation back home in order to put down some roots, and become a part of the local community. My nephew also attends Kirkoswald school so I am keen to support the school in all its efforts to support our children to develop and fulfil their potential.
As a family we like to paddle board, walk, swim and play games.
I am employed by Cumbria County Council as an Emotional Health and Wellbeing Practitioner for children in residential care and on the edge of care. From personal and professional experience I believe it takes a village to raise a child, and being a school Governor helps me to fulfil some of my duties as a parent and responsive member of the community.
